2017-
After joining Queen's University recently in July 2017, I took on the principal supervision of 1 MSc student, 2 non-thesis Master's students, and co-supervision on 1 PhD student and 4 undergraduates (capstone projects). I am recruiting more PhD and MSc students. Below please find more details about my previous supervision and teaching activities.
2016-2018
Supervise a MSc student, Junbei Zhang (University of Science and Technology of China), working on deep learning models for question answering.
*We co-authored a paper that has been submitted to a journal. The previous arxiv version can be found here.
2016-2017
Supervised a visiting PhD student, Qian Chen (from the University of Science and Technology of China). Qian worked on deep learning models for learning sentence representation and natural language inference. Qian also worked with me earlier when he was a MSc student.
*We co-authored three papers published in IJCAI, ACL, and RepEval.
2017
Supervised a visiting PhD student, Duy Tin Vo (from Singapore University of Technology and Design), on attention models for sentiment analysis.
*We co-authored a paper that has just been accepted to CICLing.
2016
Co-taught two courses at EECS, University of Ottawa (with Prof. Diana Inkpen):
• CSI-5386: Natural Language Processing
• CSI-4107: Information Retrieval and the Internet
2016
Co-supervised a visiting PhD student, Quan Liu (from the University of Science and Technology of China), on solving anaphora resolution problems, when Quan was a visiting student of the iNCML Lab at York University.
*We coauthored two papers published in IJCAI and AAAI Symposium together with Quan's principal supervisor.
2015-2016
Supervised a PhD intern student, Yong Jin (from the University of New Brunswick), working on keyphrase detection with semantic hierarchies, when Yong was a research intern at NRC.
*We co-authored a paper published in COLING.
2015-2016
Co-supervised a MSc student, Yangtuo (Tim) Peng (from York University), working on analyzing financial news to predict stock price.
2015 Guest lecturer, COMP-599, Introduction to Natural Language Processing, McGill University.
2015
Supervised a PhD intern student, Parinaz Sobhani (from the University of Ottawa), working on deep learning models for natural language processing, when Parinaz was a research intern an NRC.
*The supervision yielded three papers published in ICML, NAACL, and *SEM respectively. The paper published at *SEM (2015) received the Adam Kilgarriff Best Paper Award for Lexical Semantics.
2014 Gave a tutorial at EMNLP-2014 (on "Sentiment Analysis of Social Media Texts") with Saif Mohammad.
2003-2009 Worked as a teaching assistant at the University of Toronto (More than 20 classes in total).
My duties cover a variety of activities of teaching, including giving tutorials, supervising labs, hosting office hours, designing assignments, overseeing bulletin boards, and marking assignments/exams.)
Undergraduate courses:
• CSC 411 - Data Mining and Machine Learning
• CSC 309 - Web Programming
• CSC 190 - Data Structures and Algorithms
• CSC 180 - Introduction to Computer Programming
Graduate courses:
• CSC 2511 / 418 - Computer Graphics
• CSC 2511 / 401 - Natural Language Processing
2003 Supervised a Master student, Hui Gao (from Beihang University), working on information extraction, when I visited Microsoft Research Asia.
2002-2003 Supervised a Master student, Yan Zhang (from Beijing University), working on data processing for information extraction, when I visited Microsoft Research Asia.
1998-1999 For two semesters, I taught the course “Introduction to Programming” at a private college, China Management Software Institute; there were approximately 50 students in each semester.
